Using the SCENE mode
Come Christmas season and decorative lights hang everywhere. The lights are so pretty but when you take a picture using the full auto mode (AUTO) or the Program Auto (P) mode, the results are not very impressive. By setting the flash to flash off you can get slower shutter speeds but this does not seem to be enough and the glittering lights appear simply as bright spots on a dark background. Not only that but if you don't have a tripod, all you get is a blurred picture.
Take pictures of decorative lights using the [CANDLE] mode
Using the [ SCENE]'s [ CANDLE] mode, the ISO sensitivity is automatically set to a higher value and you can take pictures using higher shutter speeds. Also, you can take pictures that really bring out the dazzling quality of the decorative lights, keeping the surrounding atmosphere of the scene. It will depend also on the conditions of the subject, but when you take pictures of illumination scenes, the picture may be too bright. If the picture is too bright, take the picture after adjusting the exposure compensation.

Useful things to remember
With camera models that do not have [CANDLE] among the [SCENE] modes, you can use the ISO setting. With ISO sensitivities until about 400 you will need to stabilize the camera using a tripod or other method to avoid camera blur when taking pictures of dark subjects like night scenes.
With higher ISO sensitivities, even with a dark subject the shutter speed will be faster and movement blur will be less likely to occur. Even if you don't have a tripod, you can shoot the picture holding the camera in your hands and still take a picture that conveys the atmosphere of the scene. However, with higher ISO sensitivities the picture quality may not be as good as with lower ones. The resulting picture may have a grainy appearance.
